Notes for this vid:

This was not the video I intended to make when I first started.

It was just supposed to be a video examining notions of beauty and the universal feelings of inadequacy among the teenage girls in Glee. Despite being faced with different kinds of pressure and expectation, both Gleeks and Cheerios alike share the same insecurities and struggle to love themselves. When you put them right up next to each other, the similarities between Rachel and Santana, Tina and Brittany, and Mercedes and Quinn when it comes to wanting to be loved, being different from the crowd, and body image are pretty evident, as each girl is judged by her peers according to how she measures up to an unrealistic ideal. In the end, they're all in the same boat, looking for acceptance and love for who they are instead of for what they are told they should be.

However, in light of the suicides by gay teens in the last few weeks, I couldn't help but see these things through the lens of bullying too. On one hand, it's easy to see the ways in which Tina, Rachel and Mercedes are victims of bullying, in some cases at the hands of their fellow Glee club members. It's easy to want to hug them, defend them and tell them to rise above it. We should want to support them. It's the right thing to do.

But it's also easy to forget that girls like our beloved Cheerios need support too. It's hard enough to stand up for someone else when you have your own set of self-esteem issues to contend with. It's even harder to break the cycle when you have so much to lose by trying. That takes a different kind of strength that not enough people possess. To say that Santana's choices are easier than Rachel's would be foolish. They are simply different.

My point is that they all need encouragement if the cycle is ever going to break. Glee club offers each one of these girls a safe haven to be themselves and the opportunity to be better people at the end of the day. Everybody makes mistakes, but when they stick together and care enough to pull each other over the finish line, everything ends up okay, and ultimately, that's what this vid is all about too.

I have more thinky thoughts on the matter, but for now I'll stop there before I turn into Mr. Schue completely, but if you take anything away from this video, it's this:

You are beautiful the way you were born. You are not alone. I promise if you just reach out for one another, it gets better.

Thanks to zerodetorres for sparking the idea in the first place and for taking a look at the first cut. Any and all feedback is welcomed.

Lyrics to "Beautiful Disaster"

She loves her momma's lemonade
Hates the sounds that goodbyes make
She prays one day she'll find someone to need her
She swears that there's no difference between the lies and compliments
It's all the same if everybody leaves her

And every magazine tells her she's not good enough
The pictures that she sees makes her cry

She would change everything, everything, just ask her
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home

She's giving boys what they want
Tries to act so nonchalant
Afraid to see that she's lost her direction
She never stays the same for long
Assuming that she'll get it wrong
Perfect only in her imperfection

She's not a drama queen
She doesn't wanna feel this way
Only seventeen and tired, yeah

She would change everything for happy ever after
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home

She's just the way she is
But no one's told her that's okay.

She would change everything, everything, just ask her
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster

She would change everything for happy ever after
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home
She just needs someone to take her home

Santana and Quinn were probably my favorite parts about making this video. With Quinn, I just really wanted to point out that Finn and Puck came out of babygate with their popularity mostly intact, whereas Quinn got left in the dust carrying the stigma of being a teenage unwed mother. It's a total double standard. But interestingly, that allowed her to make many more steps towards being a decent human being. Quinn is all over this video, in the forefront and in the background, and I liked looking at how she operates on both sides.

As for Santana, well, I love exploring her angst and when she chooses to use her powers for good. I'm fully convinced that if not for Santana, "Beautiful" would not have happened. Maybe she did it to stop Brittany from drinking sand or maybe she did it for herself, but the point is that she supported someone who wasn't Brittany, and I don't think that would have happened without her participation in Glee club. The Cheerios might stick together, but not when facing Sue's wrath, knowing that she has that interview. It takes the captain to force them to do it.

And also, I must point out that everyone judges Brittany a little bit for her dimness, except Santana who actually seems to consider what Brittany has to say, at least for a second.

And thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

I doubt it did. I mean he still talks about making out with "new chicks" as of Grilled Cheesus. Whether it's true or just a line he used, I'm sure the vasectomy rumor got around because he was sleeping with someone new. The only dip we saw him take in popularity was when he cut his hair.

And yeah totally. Sometimes I read that look on Santana's face as "Ohshitohshitohshit please don't let this blow up in my face for letting Mercedes do her thing" and Brittany's little shrug as signs that both of them knew what was going to happen. (I think Mercedes didn't tell Kurt because he was probably the only one who could have talked her out of it.) Had things gone differently, I think Santana definitely would have caught hell for it.

This too is my headcanon. The reference to the youtube video in Britney/Brittany didn't even register at first because it sounded so natural coming from Santana. That might even be the origin of Santana and Brittany always being side by side.

(I really need more Glee icons. I only have these two. LOL.)
